Lewes, De - A local hospital is going "green." Not only does Beebe Medical Center recycle, the hospital is also making other changes.

And that makes them January's "Environmental Star" so say "goodbye" to plastic ware at Beebe Medical Center and "hello" to tater-ware.

"We have a large hospital and we use quite a large supply volume so we wanted to move forward with a green environment in the hospital," said Director of Material Development gerry Smith.

And, Beebe is tossing out styrofoam cups, opting instead for bio-degradable ones. "We are definitely looking for items that are more compostible and easier on the environment," said Director of Nutritional Services Kathi Fryling.

The greener cups, the utensils made of spuds and plastic bags all start breaking down before they hit the landfill, and their efforts and hard work are paying off. . .Beebe Medical Center is January's Environmental Star award, "we were so surprised, it'll energize us to make better selections and choices and improve our environment," said Kathi Fryling.

Improvements, hospital officials say will not only lower their "carbon footprint" but also impact the lives of future generations. "Our mission is to do what we can here at Beebe, but also support the environment and help outside live a healthy life," said President of Beebe Medical Center Jeffrey Fried.
