A credit union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative that is owned by its members. Member savings form a pool of money used to offer low interest loans to its members. Once a credit union has met all of its financial obligations it may take any surplus and pay dividends back to its members.
Credit unions serve specific members defined by their charter. Persons sharing a common bond as defined by the charter are eligible for membership as are persons related by blood or marriage.
